Featured Sermon of the Month
THE VESSEL GOD USES Judges 7:1-8, 16-22

INTRO:
Located about 12 miles SW of the DEAD SEA, is a small mount called the HILL OF MOREH, which slopes into a valley called "THE VALLEY OF JEZREEL"  And today, if you were to take a walk through this slope, you would probably notice nothing unusual. But if you were to walk through this same slope at around 1145 BC, you would notice a strange phenomena.  Surrounding this hill, would be a strange unbroken ring of pottery fragments. And if you were to bend down and pick up a piece to see it more closely, to feel it's texture and gauge its weight, you'd notice something about this jagged piece of clay that you have in your hands.

On the Convex side, which would be a pale brown you'd see, maybe a broken handle if you were lucky.

But on the Concave side...would be black.

And if you rubbed that concave side..., you'd observe that it was not a black stain like most old vessels would have, but that it could be rubbed off like the kind of soot deposit that black smoke makes.  And if you were to take this small jagged piece of clay to a Bible Archaeologist, he'd probably tell you that..

THIS WAS FROM ONE OF THE THREE HUNDRED PITCHERS USED BY GIDEON  WHEN OVERTAKING THE MIDIANITES AT MOUNT MOREH AROUND 1150 BC.

In short, what you would have in your hand, is a fragment, of the VESSEL GOD USES.

In II Tim 2:20...I read: But in a great house, there are not only vessels of Gold & Silver, but also of wood & of earth, and some to HONOR and some to DISHONOR.."

CHRIST said, concerning PAUL...."for he is a chosen VESSEL unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of  Israel..." (Acts 9:15)

"_______________" I want to talk to you about....... "THE VESSEL GOD USES"

Getting back to that jagged piece of clay, I want us to observe four qualities about this clay that can help us also to become THE VESSEL GOD USES...

If I were to do a detailed study of the compounds used to make this clay,

Majority            Minute            Traces of
oxygen            sodium            iron
silicon              potassium      magnesium
aluminum         calcium

That as the rains weathered the many rocky hills in that region, these elements would travel down streams and become deposited as clay all along banks.

It was a common clay, used for making any type of pottery.  In fact... all over the market places.  Common, generic, ordinary, cheep and in in great abundance.

AND IF YOU FEEL... common, generic, average... You are the vessels that God can use!

I . GOD USES ORDINARY VESSELS

I Cor 1:26-31..."For ye see your calling brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called..but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the things which are mighty..and the base things of the world, and the things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not,...that NO flesh should glory in His Presence.....

II Cor 3:5    "Not that we are sufficient of ourselves, to think anything as of ourselves, but our sufficiency s of God.."

PAUL        For when I am weak, then am I strong (2 Cor.12:10)

ZECH 4:6  Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

So if you think... feel.... ...God can use you!

II.  GOD USES EMPTY VESSELS
(Judges 7:16)

And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and put a trumpet in every man's hand, with EMPTY pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers..

DAVID    "Search me O God and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me (Ps 139:23..)

PAUL    "I have suffered the loss of all things and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.."(Phil.3:8)

CHRIST made Himself of no reputation, emptied Himself..Phil 2:7..

HE ALSO SAID If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me (Mat.16:24) He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. Mat.10:37-18

Lk.9:62: And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Jn.12:24: Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

O to be like Thee Blessed Redeemer.  This is my constant longing and prayer
Gladly I'll forfeit all of earth's treasures, Jesus thy perfect likeness to wear.

III.  GOD USES AVAILABLE VESSELS..

"Brake the pitchers that were in their hands" (7:19)

Rom 12:l-2......"I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." and be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is that good, acceptable and perfect will of God"

DAVID        Teach me to do Thy Will.." Ps.143:10.
Delight to do THY will.." Ps.40:8

God    And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. Ezek.20:30

ROMANS    How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? (Rom.10:14)

CHRIST     Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest (Mat.9:38)

LK.10:2    Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

LORD    Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?

ISAIAH     Here am I; send me.. ISA 6:8
Paul        Lord, what wilt thou have me to do (Acts 9:6)

And I can remember when in 1984. . .

Lord I give my life to you, Take control each day , I will follow anywhere, Near or far away

Lord I want your perfect will, Be my faithful guide, I will never be afraid, You are close beside

Let me see my mission field All around each day , Fill my heart with Jesus' love, Use me, Lord I pray

IV.  GOD USES BROKEN VESSELS....

O Lord, since Thou hast died to give Thyself for me,
No sacrifice could be too great for me to make for Thee.

You see, it is only when we become broken, that the Missionary within us is able to shine.

1 Cor.11:24: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

PS.51:7 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

OVERCOMING THE JORDANS IN YOUR LIFE

                                               (II Kings 2:1-15)

1 And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.  2  And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel. 3 And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. 4 And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho. 5 And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. 6 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the LORD hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.  7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.  8 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.  9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.  10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. 11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.  12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. 13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; 14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over. 15 And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

INTRODUCTION

ELIJAH.....   l. Desired to see God work
                     2. Was told not to continue on
                     3. Stuck it out and now....wonders...

                     (1) His Prophet-Teacher left him
                     (2) He NEVER had to cross that Jordan ALONE
                     (3) 50 of his Classmates are WATCHING

Picking up the mantle, he walks to the bank, contemplating..

                       . . . . Unable to move forward (Jordan)
                       . . . . Unable to move back (classmates)
                       . . . . Caught in the MIDDLE...HE......

Slaps the water with the mantle, cries out....

                         1. Immediately the waters part
                         2. a dry path was created...
                         3. and he walks across to the other side..
                         4. To where he is no longer greeted like a classmate
but is reverenced as a Prophet from God.

And so goes the Biblical account.....

                 BUT...Hidden behind the scenes..
                          LOST among the crowds
Left behind by the Christian race...

ARE Thousands of unseen others, who left standing at their own personal Jordans,
                   are unable to cross over...

"Is our God only a PEEK-A-BOO God Who delights........?
"Must we continually turn the handle..Jack-n-the Box..?
"Does our God take pleasure when..Tidal-wave..........?

"______________" I want to talk to you about......

OVERCOMING THE PERSONAL JORDANS IN YOUR LIFE

By "JORDANS" I am referring to.....

......That great gulf that exists from where we are at now
to where we know He wants us to be.

.....That PERSONAL HURT.....capable of letting usdown...

.....The PROMISES we know are ours but our own inability to
               claim them..

Maybe you're HERE ________________and like Elisha you have your own
             personal Jordan to cross

        Maybe you have the

        JORDAN OF...l) Financial Uncertainty

                             2) Personal Loss
                             3) Habitual sin and shame
                             4) Broken Heart
                              5) Unaswered Prayer

ITS IMPORTANT THAT WE CROSS OVER THEM BECAUSE.........

                   (1)  We all at some time will have them.
                   (2)  We may be alone when we face them (2:13)
                   (3)  The faith of others is at stake (2:7,15)
                   (4)  Until we cross over, we are useless for God.
                    (5)  We just NEED to know.

THREE THINGS HE DID WITH THE MANTLE that we should do with God's Word

I    GO TO THE WORD FOR COMFORT (2:12-13)

BEFORE he went to mantle                              AFTER he went to Mantle
He saw, cried, tore                                           He walked calmly back & stood

PS 119:16    "I will delight myself in Thy statues, I will not Forget Thy Word.."
A  26:3.        "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee.."
PS 119:8      "My soul fainteth for Thy salvation, but I hope in Thy Word.."
PS 56:3        "What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee..In God I will praise His Word.."
Ps 119:50     "This is my comfort in my affliction, for Thy Word hath quickened me."
    Rom.15:4      "Comfort of the Scriptures.."
Jer.15:16      "Thy Word was the REJOICING of my heart.."
Acts 2:41     "Then they that GLADLY received His Word.."

II  WALK WITH THE WORD FOR NEEDED DIRECTION (2:13)

PS 119:105       "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path."
PS 37:31           "If the Law of God is in his heart, NONE of his steps will slide.."
PS 119:67         "Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now have I kept thy Word.."

Note: The reason why many Christians do not see God come through for them, is because by not following His Word for needed direction, they did not God to the place where God is going to do a miracle for them!

III  TRUST IN GOD'S WORD FOR DELIVERANCE (2:14)

ILLUSTRATION.... Once when I visited the Philippines a National Pastor sent me a letter in Tagalog letter that I was to give to a jeepney driver so that I could get to his home... I was nervous... worried... afraid to trust it.  But I arrived and all my worries were unfounded.  How much more is God's letter to us able to bring us home safely if we will bit trust and follow it!

PS 56:3..."In what time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee.."

 APPLICATIONS

              (1) To The Christian
Go to the Word for Comfort
Walk with the Word for Direction
Trust in the Word for Deliverance

               (2) To the LOST.
Your personal Jordan is called sin that cannot be crossed over until you turn
to Christ for repentance and forgiveness...

ISA 59:1-2...."Behold, the Lord's Hand is not shortened that it cannot save, neither His ear heavy that it cannot hear.  But your iniquities have separated between you and your God and your SINS have hid His face from you, that He will not hear.."

EPH 2:13-14..."BUT NOW in CHRIST JESUS, ye who are sometimes were far off, are made nigh by the blood of Christ.  Who hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us."
